Why Israel exists
A reality check for a culture drowning in historical amnesia — and for Christians unsure what to believe about the Jewish state.
Some people around the world are furious about this past weekend’s decimation of the leadership of the Islamic Republic of Iran. These people tend to be either hardcore Islamists, in which case their fury is at least understandable, or left-leaning westerners suffering a bad case of historical amnesia. This malady is rampant among those who’ve embraced one or more of these falsehoods:
People are basically good (except those who voted for Trump, of course!)
Everything we need should be free.
The tiny country of Israel is the most evil nation in the world, and the cause of all the world’s problems.
Embracing any of those precepts requires divorcing oneself from both reality and history. Because of course:
People are not basically good, and without guardrails of some kind (religion, government, etc.), societies descend into humanity-denying, downright animalistic behaviors. (See: all of history.)
Because people are not intrinsically good, but look out for themselves, no collectivist society has ever thrived, and forced collectivism has killed more humans than any other cause. (See: Stalin. Also, all of history.)
But today we’re thinking about #3. And the denial of both reality and history on this topic is at epic levels, thanks in no small part to the “work” of Candace Owens and other “right wing” Jew-haters.
If you’ve consumed some of their opinions, or if your history’s a little weak on this topic, or if you’ve found yourself wondering if there’s any truth to some of the vile things you’ve heard some alleged Christians claim about Jews and Israel — this, below, is for you.
God has a place and a plan for Israel. Here’s how the modern version came back to life in biblical Israel, and the heartbreaking truth about why it’s necessary.
Because Jews have been told to “just leave” for 2000 years… and that’s why the State of Israel exists.
